Sometimes I am out in the world and I hear a song and it catches my ear and I stop and cry ‘Who is this? I must know!’ and it’s you, Mr Impala.
When your album Currents came out I listened to it on a loop until I could no longer get past the first track and that track is Let It Happen. It’s so good I no longer require the rest of the album. That is a compliment.
Let It Happen has everything. Great percussion, squeaky electronics, finger snapping and then you sing uplifting lyrics like ‘Let it happen, it’s gonna feel so good’.
‘An ocean growing inside, all the others seem shallow’.
‘All this running around, bearing down on our shoulders. I can hear an alarm, it must be morning.’
Yes, yes it is morning and it’s the best morning ever!
There’s some old school synth happening. At a certain point the music repeats and repeats and it shakes you up, it’s going on so long, it feels peculiar it goes on so long. It starts to break up a little and the needle is stuck and it goes on and on! Does it go on too long? No! It goes on just the right amount of time to hypnotise you. The synth strings come in and it repeats and repeats and swirls around you until suddenly your life is changed! Then comes some low chanting and funky funky bass and we all dance.
Triumphantly you declare ‘I was ready all along!’ and we dance to the bass with our hands in the air. Yeah!
That’s 8 minutes of beautiful creative struggle and fulfilment in one perfectly unusual song.
You are so right Tame, let it happen; we’ve been ready all along.
Thanks.
Love, Kim
